Impact of IT on business in the future?

Business processes would run all the way through IT now.

In a business, communication plays the major role and IT focuses on quality communication. This is involved through phone, fax, internet, e-mail, chat, voice chat, live help, VOIP phone etc.

If you look at a broad spectrum of information technology, then the impact on business is vast. I.T. is affecting nearly every facet of human endeavour, and that effect is to speed up, to simplify the process of work, of innovation, of scientific exploration.

Software Improvments:
Everything is speeding up, for instance I am writing this, well; I am not actually writing it! I am speaking, and my computer is writing it down for me. Think of the effect that will have on the chemical and biological sciences.

IT Increasing exponentially:
The other factor affecting IT, and it is hidden from most of us, and that is that the rate of change in IT, it is exponential. What does this mean? It means that we now have the capacity to do what we did in the previous 100 years, within 20 years if we had to do it again. But in 10 years time, we could do the same 100 years in just 7 years, and ten years after that, what, could we do it in one year? What I am trying to say is, every slight, every minimal improvement in IT, speeds the whole process up, and that is what is happening now, and it is hidden from most people.

GDP Increasing Exponentially:
The software and hardware examples above are just two examples of what I see, but these are just two insignificant examples of what is happening throughout industry. Because of the extra capacity that computers give people, many are four times more efficient at their jobs than they were and this increase in individual's production capacity is having a marked effect on gross domestic product in many countries. If you take the GDP figures, depending on the country, a typical example would be somewhere between 2% and 7%. I believe China is doing very well at the moment, somewhere about 5% or 6%.? I could easily look it up on the Internet (Productivity improvement!) 2%, 4%, 6%, it doesn't sound very much, but don't forget, that is an increase on the previous year, not on a bench mark figure. So over the course of ten years, the increase is significant. It is similar to compound interest if you like.

The Singularity is Near:
What is the singularity? Well this was a new idea to me, however the way I understand it, and I'm still not sure that I grasp it entirely, but within the next century, by about 2045 according to Ray, computers will vastly exceed human intelligence, they will be able to design future generations of themselves, almost instantly. How does this affect us? Well within twenty years, Ray predicts that the desktop machine that you can buy for a thousand pounds would have the equivalent processing power of the human mind. And not many years after that, possibly ten or twenty, would have the processing power equivalent to the human civilization. Equivalent to every man woman and child on the planet! I didn't believe it was possible either.
